I'm going up to Sydney some time in december and hope to go kitesurfing. Is it worth getting lessons or should I just hire the equipment (is it even possible to hire)? Should I try with my Blade?

Talk to goshen and bruce (at kite power) about lessons. I'm pretty sure they provide all the gear etc for lessons, and will take the time to show you how to use the equipment properly, and what will best suit your needs. As for the blade, it would be all right body dragging, but you will need around 20 knots plus for a 4.9 blade, not the best conditions for a beginer. (long swim in!) hope this helps.

Ring Steve at the sans souci Kitepower. They will hook you up with a lesson. About $140 for a lesson... i think.

Leave the blade alone until after you can do it. then go nuts.

Well I'm going up to Sydney in December (around Xmas) so I thought I'd get lessons there. Would I need to book in advance? Are they popular?

Yes, you will need to book in advance - things get pretty busy at that time. You'll learn pretty quick if you've got experience with Blades. If temtped to go kiteboarding on the water with the blade, expect to swim in. Even if you confidently fly the kite, you'll crash it sooner or later when you try to put it all together with the board.

A slight correction though on kiteboarding with the 4.9, if you only weigh 55kg (??) then you could use the 4.9 in as little as 12 knots, if you had a larger style board.

Don't even think about going out with inflatable gear without getting a lesson (no one would hire it to you anyway).

All the best,

Goshen
