View Full Version : Another newcomer looking for somewhere to fly!!
G'day!! I'm another pom newly arrived on these shores.... I've just got my cargo from the UK and am now a frustrated flyer as I can't find anywhere flat enough or big enough to use my buggy and Blade 3's. I was spoilt in the UK with big sandy (albeit cold....) beaches, but in Albury/Wodonga am struggling big time. Does anyone have any suggestions please? It would be great to meet up with some like minded Aussies too....... :D

You could try a local farmers padock???
Or try to find a road that has no trees on it, that is only used by local traffic. A dirt road would be the best.
There should be a local footy field if you want to have a play.
Ask around for the local lakes that have dried up. There should be one or two???
I'm in Melb too so I don't think I am the best person to reply.
I will see if I can find out some more info.
If you fancy a nice drive the next traction (buggy and ATB) event is on at 13th beach, Barwon Heads (just South of Geelong, facing Bass Strait).
It's on a Saturday, we normally have the races on a Sunday.
Sorry, it's the 21st of this month.
We will not be racing until about 4pm, due to the tides and most will be getting pizza, and staying the night down that way.
More info from the Kite Power web site:
www.kitepower.com.au Look under the news section for series info.
You can then leave any time on Sunday. As always lets hope the weather gods are in our favour.
Good luck in your quest too.
Nigel
Thanks guys, I actually have to come down to Melbourne quite frequently on business, so I may try to fit it in with one of the racing sessions
I understand your problem. We spent a few hours one day looking for a good spot.
The best we found in town was a footy field at North Albury. We also went all around the western fringes of Albury and found a nice patch of grass beside the lawn cemetery but the wind there was no good.
We found an unfenced paddock out of Albury in an industrial estate at a tiny little town somewhere north of Lavington. Unfortunately the weather turned bad so we didn't give it a very good test. The ground was fairly rough.
The place I would have liked to try was beside the lake at Bonegilla. Have you been there?. Maybe you would get a south easter off the water and there is plenty of grassy parkland.
I reckon Bonegilla would suit Nigel because I am sure he could find a picnic table to leap over (or crash into).
:D I actually live next to the lake and so potentially its an ideal spot. The best expanse of grass that I've tried so far is at Ebden reserve, but the wind is awful as it predominantly comes off the hills behind you. The only other place that I've seen from the water that looks promising is Huon Reserve - hopefully I'll be able to suss it out one night this week - I'll let you know how it goes....
As far as using the footy pitches go, whats the form on asking permission in Oz? I was always very careful to get permission in the UK as I didn't want to upset anyone and give kiters a bad name.......

Just approach the footy club or cricket club and ask who loooks after the ground.
Explain what you want to do, and see what they say???
I am sure that they would be very interested in seeing a kite buggy, might even help to explain what you want to do??
Bob, I don't run into tables, just park benches :-)))
I know that Michael Harris also has had a park bech leap out at him too.
Just ask to see his shins!!!! I think the scarring is still there???
Might have to try and jump one ?????
Tally so far??
Park benches 2
buggyiers 0
I like my dog tally better:
Nigel 5
Dogs 0
Nigel
 Sorry Nigel. I should have said the park bench is for dogs to hide under.
