View Full Version : Buggy Day Report: Lake George 120205
What a time!
11 Cars, around 8 buggies, 4 or 5 land boarders and more kites than anyone could have flown in a long long time.
As per normal waited for the Easterly to roll in around 5pm and spent the first few hours prior to that just sitting around waiting and playing with the occasional solid thermal as it rolled in from any direction.
The easterly came in about 5, nice and strong and constant. Land boarders reported that the surface was a bit soft for the smaller wheels. It was observable that the surface had changed. The soft layer on top was a little deeper, before solid ground could be found. Probably due to the rain we have had recently, softening up the hard packed layer. Sorry to those lads trying to make the best of things on the boards. But great to have you all coming out to make the day that much more enjoyable, thanks guys!
Buggying was fantastic once again with the wind ranging from my 3.5 meter to my 4.8 meter, so bugger it, spent most of the time on the 4.8. Did have the Razer out, but tangled the lines and by the time we got that sorted, the wind was too big for it anyway. Top speed around 60kms per hour on the 4.8.
Wato was observed sitting sideways in his buggy, executing buggy jumps, multiple 360 spins, high speed backwards and more. Mark spent the bulk of the day flying a 7.5 Naish inflatable on a bar and was really screaming across wind. I am sure he topped out with a speed that made mine look rather silly. Saw Paul a couple of times in the wind but sadly didn?t get the time to say hi really, as was the case with the hoards of others that were enjoying the day. Sorry lads, once the wind comes in the mad eyes go on and what can I say.
Ian I hope you enjoyed yourself, but be real careful with the kite too high above you. It can be extremely dangerous to be lofted. Hope you enjoyed yourself anyway.
Matt it looks like another buggy is in order, having lost your for about two hours to your girlfriend.
We will now probably make this a regular event and once agreed to will post up another date for another great day in the wind! Everyone is welcome.
I didn't take any photos (again) but am sure someone will post a few up. Watch this space.
Also yes I probably have taken out the "Crash Test Dummy" award but will leave it to someone else to pay me out. Baby am I sore today!

Yep I'm careful! Don't worry too much!
The most dangerous thing out there yesterday for me was the wind. With my Blade I just couldn't trust the wind, it was way too gusty, and then it would suddenly just drop. But I wish I had enough money for a Frenzy now, they seem to be where it's at.
I also don't think I'll take the board out there again, my weight wasn't enough to get the board to hold an edge under the surface, and the wheels were too small to stay on the top.
It is an awesome place for buggying though. Hope to see the pictures of the group. What was that UK magazine called?
Ian
Can totlly understand your comments about the surface. The lose stuff on top was much deeper than the last couple of times we have been out on the lake. Slowed the buggy down a heap resulting in me getting no where like the speed I was looking for.
Great to have you come out anyway. Interested in coming to a local footy oval when we next go out?
iancl

Yeah I would be interested, I might go down to dickson oval too some time.
Hi Gary, Ian and others. I've posted the group photo at Lake George....one was too pixalated and the other is reasonable....still trying to work out what quality is accepable on the website...they knocked me back on my first few attempts!
It was a great day.....sorry I wasn't there when you had that argument with the cars.
Cheers

Happy monday to you all! It was a pretty fun day which for me was capped off with a prety crap drive home. 3hrs driving after a day on the lake was brutal. Next time I will stay over night at goulburn.
The surface was a bit on the soft side for boarding but it was still fun. Once you hit 'virgin' surface it was sweet. If the surface was a little harder than it would have been EPIC!
I will try to find some bigger tyres for next time. All the boarders were running 8inch tyres, 2 inches wide. You can get upto 10inch tyres, 4 inches wide onto ATB hubs. I'll have to get some. With tyrews that big I think that the soft surface wouldn't be a worry.
Ian, I think your weight would be OK on this surface with a smaller kite. And.... if you were to get a frenzy that would help too. They cut upwind very well. Better than the blades I used to fly (BladeII).
I'd be up for another visit. Just let me know when.

Great day out guys, cheers for having us along. Cath has found a new love for buggying, so looks like I will be back on the landboard again!!! Awsome location for the buggies, but challenging on the landboards, I'll second schmik's idea of larger diametre tyres, that would make the world of difference.
We are looking forward to the next session on the lake, please keep us posted!
Matt
All sorts of comments.
The Surface. It was soft due to over use by us twice before and because (I think) of the rain. Next time we go out, we'll take a different location on the lake. It is not like it is lacking options. Hopefully therefore heaps better for the boarders!
Things learnt: I propose we park the cars well away from where we are flying. (Yep I actually learnt something from this weekend) Park the cars, according to the wind, move 50 meters or so up wind (or just away) from that and use this area as a kite staging place. Bring your own fold out chairs. Then go kiting in an area beyond that again. No body needs to feel how I am today, again.
Suggested next date: (completely open to discussion) March 19.
Let me count the days "events? (enjoyed? by everyone)
Keys locked in cars 2
Small crash 1
Bent axle bolt on buggy 1 (mine, but of course)
Tangled lines 3 (all mine)
Broken Handles 1 (yep mine again)
Buggies lost to girlfriends 1 (for hours I might add, but thankfully not mine, for a change)
Broken car aerial 1
Gosh I don't know whether I actually enjoyed the day :-)
On the flip side
Around four hours constant easterly, and kilometres of dry lake bed that more than made up for any of the above.
Gary
Matt obviously you got home ok, with a second hand tool box?
Hi Gary
I can't make it on the 19/20th....how about 26/27th March. I'll understand if others prefer the 19th. I'm also out on March 5/6th and 12/13th. Busy Month!

Can we have a back-row/front-row name list for the picture please. I don't think I picked up everyone's name that day. It would also be good to have a name/username list.
Gary
Can you do the honours re names. The back row on left in yellow is Tim from the UK, with Wato on the extreme right. I can't remember the others in the middle and those on the right in the front row.

Great day at the lake.
The bigger area just north might prove worth a look for a firmer surface next time.
Parking might be best upwind of where we play after all the abuse our cars took from kites and people :-) We could put chairs out in front and the static flyers could fly on one side and the kites can be parked on the other.
The wind has been very good to us the last three times out. The easterlies tend to come in during summer when there is a high pressure system directing wind onto the coast. During the day, the high strengthens and the winds push all the way into the lake by late afternoon. These winds are smooth and often reach 20knots.
Before the Easterly, the winds are often light and NW in direction and you can get quite strong thermals (bubbles of rising air). Be carefull when your kite is high because they can loft you like Ian found out! You can see the easterly coming because the cumulus clouds east of the lake start to dissipate. When the easterly comes the wind will swing light east and then all of a sudden pick up to more than 15 knots, usually. Several people got clobbered by it when it hit (I grabbed someone being hauled downwind by a Blade with feet barely touching the ground!). During winter the westerlies are our main source of power and the thermals don't make much of a show so we can buggy all day if we can handle the pain!
I am looking forward to next time. Despite the tangles, crashes and keys locked in cars it was a top day!
Cheers,
Wato

The buggy stealing girlfriend is Cath!!!
Gary, yes my poor tool box does look very second hand!!! Time for a new one. For those that don't know at 9pm I locked my keys in the tool box on the back of my ute  . I then had to spend 35minutes bashing the hinges off it with a brick in the pitch black :( . They sure make those things strong! We then copped a hail storm while trying to get back into Canberra, but there was no damage to my car.
So Gary I'll add to your list a torn Little Devil and a smashed tool box!
Had a great time though and am looking forward to the next session, let me know the date and Cath and I will try and make it down. The kite is in for repair as we speak.
Oh, and I stongly support the notion of flying downwind of the cars!!!

Matt, I have already suggested a date for the "Return to the Lake". Give us your two cents worth, on your preference.
I would also add a small hole in my Razer that I just discovered, to the list.

I'm 3rd from the left, next to gary and in front of tim.
I prefer the 19th, can't make it over easter.
I have sourced some 10inch x 4inch tyres already. They are massive!
I'll be keeping up with the buggies....... well maybe not but I think it will be a lot faster and getting upwind should be a lot easier.
And I too think the cars should stay up wind of us.
BTW, who is bringing the BBQ ? :D

Mike,
The BBQ sounds like a top idea. I don't have a gas one, but am sure that someone would. Maybe a lunch time or early afternoon rock up time to enjoy cooking pleasures beofre screaming across the lake is the way to go.
Any takers on bringing a BBQ out to the lake for the next time?

Umm.... not the easter weekend, I think that's the weekend of the 26th isn't it? So not that one!!! Any of those other dates are fine I think. Some saturdays I have to work, but only until 12 noon like last weekend, so I'll be out there by 3:30 again. That suits me though, because the wind doesn't pick up until after that anyway. Generally saturdays are better than sundays for us sydney folk, nasty drive home on a sunday night before work on monday! That's my 2 cents, but I'll work around you guys...

It sounds like the 19th is becoming more central on the radar screen then?
We promise at the very least to go to a new location on the lake in search of a harder surface for the land boarders and frankly ourselves as well.

BBQ idea sounds very civilised. But who will cook if the wind cranks up? It's hard enough to get people to stop flying long enough to take photos or video!

Agree with Wato concerning, my concerns about who might cook :-)
Am I still sore hell no!
My right leg is killing me,
My right hip is slowing my walking
My left wrist is still slowing my keying down.
My shoulders are now begining to move again.
My lower back feels great when asleep in bed.
My left bottom three ribs, let me know I am alive still, continually.
Sore: not at all Wato thanks.
On for the 19th of course.

Wato,
I am offended by your slant on Mark's and Mine good character. Technically we aren't test dummies, as we have actually been on the receiving end. Nthing test about that! (maybe we should become the "Crash for Real Dummies". CRD has a ring to it, don't it)
Also where did the "we" bit come in Wato. I haven't seen you, over the top of a car, knocked out cold, upside down at speed, or anything for that matter. Would hardly call you one of the team :-)
It will be good to check out your kit Ian when you return. Let us know possible dates and we'll try to make a date of it on the lake again.

Hi Tim, Gary and Wato and others.
I sold my old 7.3m Concept wave kite and have bought a Ozone Samurai 6m second hand. That should fill the light wind days hopefully. I got the tip from one of your earlier posts last year Gary, about appropriate kit for inland traction kiting. Goshen from Kitepower (and others) advised that the Samurai is more forgiving in the typical gusty Canberra conditions, which is why I bought it.
Tim, I was the guy who lent you the buggy (Paul van Belkom).....sorry if the pics didn't come out that I took of you (forgot about the zoom!). Nonetheless, looking forward to seeing some pics of the day when you settle back in.
Paul VB
PS: Still hanging out for group decision for Lake George on Sun 20th March rather than 19th. How about we go out on both days (ie those that can survive the divorce)

In consideration of those that might be coming from Sydney, I intend to go out on the Saturday. The other side is that it gives me a day to mend!, before having to go back to work. But this is just my position. I know that Mark is going to try to ensure he can get thier without "feeling sick" on the 19th. But his work have not yet published his roster.

19th is best for me. I think the others form sydney will prefer the 19th too. We will probably stay in goulburn or canberra for the night.
The drive home to sydeny after the last time was pretty hard work.
I have a 5m samurai. Very nice kite. The 6m should be sweet. They turn very well for large foils. They aren't the fastest kites around but they sure are stable and easy to easy to ground handle on your own.

G'day Folks,
Both days are fine for me, but Saturdays are probably the best overall policy for everyone.
Paul is it just the 19th that is a problem for you, or are Saturdays a problem in general? I could be induced to come out for a buggy on Sunday too - especially if the wind is blowing in the morning.
The Samurai is a good inland choice. You don't need a race kite to be fast.
Cheers,
Wato
Always the way.
Mark has all Saturdays off, up to but not including the 19th. He is working today on swapping with someone.
I had to place a stake in the ground, but as always managed to drive it right though Marks heart, but the bugger is still moving :-). Go the Crash Test Dummies!, we just never give up.
But Saturday's seem to be a better day for the guys from Sydney.
Also as part of twisting Wato's ear off for about two hours the other night, we managed to decide to find another place on the Lake with virgin (as hard packed as possible) ground, so the land boarders get a much better run.
Cheers

Hey guys,
Saturday 19th would definitely be better for me. Have a few extras interested in coming from Sydney. Including schmik and I there may be up to 5 of us heading down now.
Looking forward to it. My LD is fixed and ready!
Matt
Matt,
Not quite sure what this means yet, but I'll try to go out early to locate a better place for us all. I think that actually north of where we are is more space again.
I acknowledge that this may leave me, by myself without wind for a while but think it better we put the time in to locate different options on the lake as we go.
So maybe I'll get out there around 01:00 / 01:30ish to go for a hunt. Anyone else wanting a tour of the lake, free to join in of course.
Cheers

Hi Gary,
That sounds great, I'm sure the guys on landboards will appreciate that. I will get there as early as I can, but am working in the morning again until midday, so I anticipate being there around 3:30pm like last time, so I'll probebly miss the tour of the lake.
Matt
Hi Guys
I think Gary is right in suggesting the patch further north than where we were last time......but guys.....don't screw around with it too much, because I plan to be there on Sunday afternoon on my way back from Sydney. So Wato, if you are interested I'll call you from Sydney, and we can meet there, say.... mid afternoon possibly. Anyone else interested let me know and give me your phone numbers so that I can confirm the arrangements either way.

PS Took the 6m Samurai out yesterday, and had a ball in light winds.

G'day all,
Was out at Lake George this arvo for about an hour and a half. Wind was about 17knots Easterly. It was nice for a few buggy jumps and teaching my wife some buggying.
The surface was quite a bit harder than before as it was still not 100% dry after recent rain. It was quite fast. I tried an area north of where we were last (Just follow the main track until you get there). We might be lucky and get the same conditions on the 19th of March.
Cheers,
Wato
Just in case we have any newibes to the lake rock up.
Assume all fences have wire in them, most of it barbed. So until you come up to a fence line real slow and confirm no wire, don't try to race through, or you may end up in many little pieces.
Please respect the request to park where asked. We have had a recent experience where, because of where we were flying and where the cars were parked, I came off real second hand.
But do come and enjoy!

G'day Tim,
Good on ya. I look forward to seeing the article! (We'll get it in the Newsagents in Oz around July if it comes out in May - slow boats and all of that).
To all the other folks who haven't seen Powerkite mag, it is an excellent UK magazine devoted exclusively to land kiting. It is nice to have a land magazine and it is a better read than the Kitesurf mags which are typically full of froth and posers... :-) Just ask your newsagent to get it in for you.
Cheers,
Wato
Hi Folks,
Went to the Lake in search of wind and a harder surface. Found the later but the wind wasn't that kind to us.
Good news is that we know where a decent size patch of harder surface is. Maybe a bit better for the landboarders on the 19th.
Just head for the cars lads, I'll park where the hard stuff is.

Well it is a gamble. Having not seen wha tthe surface does when it has been wet, it is a really diffcult call all round.
Totally understand that the effort to come to the lake is much bigger for the lads from "out of state" so to speak, but don't have an easy solution really other than making phone calls to those coming from Sydney as we arrive at the lake to report on it and perhaps have you lads (and gals) turn around and go home again.
A real punt for us all!

Hi Gary,
A phone call would be great if the conditions are horrid, cheers mate!!! We are all looking forward to heading down again and happy to take the gamble driving down there!!! I have no idea how many of us are heading down this time... somewhere between 4 and 8 I think? We'll just surprise you on the day!!!
My buggy has undergone a bit of modification since last time and now has a speedo, so look out! It will eithr go faster or the stacks will be more spectacular!!! not to sure yet! But don't worry, I have no tickets on trying to become one of the crash test dummies, I'll leave all the serious stacking to you guys!
Cheers,

Timing will be the trick Matt.
Quickly talked to Mark about this today. Both of us are going to fly on the 19th, come rain hail or snow. Might be interesting to see how slippy the surface will be and how muddy we will become.
The only factor is that we have wind. Canberra has had about 4 hours of light but constant rain today and now has not a breath of wind.
Long and short, I?ll try to call you when we arrive to update you on conditions, but if we have wind we are going flying. Not sure however how the land boarders might fair, and I can?t afford to use the work mobile for 10 calls on a Saturday.
Guess it will sort itself out on Saturday regardless.
Cheers

16-03-2005, 03:01 PM
No worries, I'll fly regardless of the conditions too. Bit of mud wont deter us! Don't worry about ringing, I'll ring you at about 2pm when we are on our way and see if there is any wind in Canberra at that time, or if it's absolutely pooring with rain, but we'll probebly just head down anyway because the wind didn't even pick up until after 5 last time anyway. See you on Saturday!

G'day Folks,
The main problem with rain is that you can't drive onto the lake without being bogged (but you can buggy/board the edge - it just sucks when you are unlucky enough to get a westerly). Having said that, I have always been able to drive onto the lake, although I haven't been after very heavy rain. Today we only got 3mm and I don't anticipate heaps of rain - we get a lot less than Sydney. We'll see when we get there. If we are lucky, we might get decent SE winds on Sat, which would be nice.
I'll post an update on the likely wind conditions on here on Friday night if anyone wants to check.
Cheers,
Wato
Wato, if you were really a part of the crash test dummy crew you would come out into the middle and get real dirty with the rest of us
Looking forward to a day with wind. BOM are forecasting Se Winds for the next few days. Fingers Crossed.

Looks like we will probably all come down in one convoy from syd so Matt can speak to Gary and we'll speak to matt.
I have sourced some 10inch x 4 inch tyres for the mountain board. These are as wide as a standard buggy tyre and there is 4 of them not 3
Whatever deck these tyres are fitted too will not have any problems on a soft surface.
I have just checked BOM and it still looks like the weather will be OK on Sat and that there shouldn't be too much rain between now and then.
Fingers Crossed!
Schmik
Rained a bit yesterday and last night. Today is good wind with scattered clouds. If this keeps up the surface will go rock hard!, with the wind drying out a totally new surface. Should be good!
Also took a decision to have a bit of a sale. Check out the for sale section.

G'day all,
I like buggying in mud (I am notorious with a rather stern kite festival organiser in Tassie for buggying around where I apparently shouldn't have) but I don't like my car being bogged in the middle of nowhere!
Hopefully the conditions will be good, still SE winds and cloudy conditions forecast. Wind was good today. Was out test flying Dave's new 3m Samurai (he has been well and truely bitten by the kite bug) at lunch today.
Cheers,

Canberra weather check.
Dry sunny good wind, we will not have an issues tomorrow with the conditions on the Lake chaps, if this keeps up!
For others reading this and planning on coming from Sydney. I will not be calling Matt unless there is a major problem, which based on todays weather there won't be. So we all look forward to seeing you there!
Wato, just to provide you some assurance. (just for you, becuase we know who much we have to pamper you) Mark is bringing his four wheel drive so he can pull you to safety, car buggy and all! :-)

Just got back from 2 hours at the local oval. If the Se winds keeps up like it was today, anything above my 4.8 will be nuts.
Sitting in the buggy, holding onto the frame so that when I got taken up the buggy came with me.
The Limo was doing the fastest speed it has ever done today, with Mark on top screaming away as normal. :-)

I am bringing a gas element and heaps of water. Bring your own Tea Coffee Sugar, milk and cups, if you would like a hot drink! (everyone welcome)
Also if anyone wants to "cook up" feel free. I am bringing some sauages and bread along. Time will tell if I get the chance to eat, little own cook and eat, depending upon the wind and my body. :-)

Just fantastic, what more can be said. Whilst the start of the day was a little slow, the wind came in for real around 16:00.
Total count of 12 kites in the air at one stage, my buggy clocked 56 km?s in total, we buggied until 20:00, where all you could do is pick out the shadow of a kite and work out where the rider and buggy was, or if lucky be looking into the moon to get some light on the subject. I think five land boards, one kite bike and more buggies than I could count. Not a bad day by anyone?s standards.
My day started by arriving to the Lake at about 12:30. The surface whist soft underneath was still nice and firm on top, so the buggy wheels (and hopefully land boarders) wheels hardly broke the surface. The rains over the last couple of days actually really help the situation.
Also for those that may have not noticed or didn't think to drop by, the cooked sauages and hot coffee went down well. I'll bring the same kit next time so feel free to bring whatever for a cook up and some coffee or tea, for a hot brew. All welcome!
The breeze was really light for the first few hours, but picked up, as usual, after Wato broke out th glider and hey presto in came an excellent, constant, wind from the south east. Wato please make sure you always bring your wind making glider!
Once the stiff breeze arrived the limo really began to develop some speed, with my top speed of 50kms per hour. Which I am sure Wato almost doubled with his home made 5.4 kite. It looked like he was going after the sound barrier at one stage.
Knowing the ?crash test dummy? aspect would not have been complete without an incident and in the knowledge that my fellow kiters were not going to hold with tradition, some one had to do something. So I managed to complete another successful crash test at around 40kms per hour. In fine ?crash test dummy? tradition. Man on day I am going to tame my Razor, one day!
Hopefully those that came enjoyed themselves, knowing that those that stuck around little the wind really came in, certainly did.
Next booking April 23rd, as a suggestion.
Look forward to seeing everyone again!
(photos posted soon. Matt send me your postal address, I took 596 photos, 993 meg in total, or I could email them ;-) )

"... I can't believe we missed the sausages!!!"
Matt,
You've got to get in quick where the Crash Test Dummies are concerned. A considerable amount of food is needed to fuel their stupidity!

Wato, I'll be sure to call in sick at work next time so that I get in early enough for sausages... not that the two cheeseburgers and watered down coke from maccas wasn't fantastic!
For those tracking the Lake George saga, Gary (Sparky21) has started a new posting headed NEXT LAKE DAY. The 23 April is the next outing, and I'll be there. So if your interested probably best to post to the new heading.
