View Full Version : Murraire show grounds
Murrarie Sports grounds :goplay: Landboard, Buggy, Static fly
Wynnum Road, Murrarie .... just opposite the Caltex/a little down the road from Cannon Hill Shoping Centre.
Landboard, Buggy, Static fly
Toilets
BBQ's
BMX and Skate board bowl
About 10 Acres of rubbish dump ..... re-claimed from the 80's and its wasteful ways .... made safe for us all by a few 100 mm of topsoil and a layer of turf..........
Murrarie is a fine example of re-cycling :ok:
You can pretty much set up anywhere you like, there is plenty of room
Watch out fo poltergusts as the park is 'girthed by tree' ;)
This thread ..... hopefuly will become a moot place like the Bribie thread. If your heading down to Murrarie, are thinking about heading down or have been there and just want a place to post your pics or tell of your adventures
This is the place to post :popcorm1:

And I notice youve been out kiting today... bastid !!
Its rained here for 24 hrs straight now. Maybe tomorrow will dawn a new day...without rain.

I may make it down for a look, have a 3rd birthday party nearby, won't be able to fly though. Had a good session yesterday, perfect amount of wind for my ability level. Had to pack up when that storm front came in, Started to get a little uncomfortable with the 10m and couldn't be bothered setting up the 3m.

This is what the Bureau says, I think it also needs to warn people to pack small kites, how irresponsible of them. Enjoy the poltergusts at Murarrie today.

cant know might make it ,an about being tied up  we'll see what happens mr mcp:D:D
Bummer Wolfie
I was going to give you a call when I was on me way .... about 1/2 hr
What an interesting afternoon ...
Gusty as a mad bastard ... full blow yo-yo show, but all the kids both big and small stuck it out and had pretty a good time. Nothing like a spontanious build up of people to make itchy conditions awesome.
Let's see .... I can't remember where I put my phone let alone names :o but I'll give it a bash
We had Tiger and I
Then Wolfie rocks up
Then Tom ... then Jeremy ... then Paul
Then there's a few people already there .... or that wander over during, that we get to meet as well ...
There was Jon and Sharon and bub .... Sharon was being trained by Jon who was pretty new himself, both of who braved 1/2 a dozen laps each with me in the Trailer
There was Marty and his wife and thier little girl (who had her 2 line stunt kite in the air for at least 3 hours) Marty was sporting a nice little quiver + landboard ...
Then there was an older gent + his lovely wife who brought his new 3m stunt kite that he landed off e-bay down for a bash .... he didn't bank on the wind being tit's and he thought the place would be empty  .... none outa 2  ... lol ... well, he set up his chairs and we put on a good show anyway.
Not to forget the 3 little tackers + dad and their single line lizard which at one stage got away and made it from one side of the park to the other with all 4 of them chasing it(I had the benny hill song going in my head) I reckon it would have covered 300 metres in total, the first half there were times when either one of the kids or the Dad could almost reach the handle (floating 2-3 m above ground) but the kite would pull away ... like when you tease you cat ... lol ... finally meeting the trees at the opposite side of the park and being rescued
Then there's the people I didn't mention ... who I hope to be corrected on ;)
In all there were about 6 or 7 power kites going and another 2 - 4 sports kites ....
Stack of the day had to go to me .... I was just starting off for a Buggy ride and a good gust was followed by complete nothing so I had no choice but to jump out and run backward as the kite had shot over my head and was begining to fall ... as I ran back I saw the kite begin to spiral left so I grabbed the left line and yarded in about a metre of line ... all the time running backward .... I felt that beaut feeling of tension in the right place ... I had caught her :D and SLAM  I T-boned (backward)Tiger who was chasing me on his BMX bike. I fell straight on top of him (backward remember) and that is how we stopped ... :o
Him 1/2 under the bike ... me on my back on top of him ... and a little 5m terror slashing around in 2 stroke wind just overhead
Funny as ....
He's ok .... I'm ok ... :o
We all had a few runs ... good and bad
... it was one of those days when you realy had to fly your kite :yes3:
I got a couple of Pics ... they are pretty ordinary.
Paul ... I saw YOU take a few ... :D;)
http://www.extremekites.com.au/gallery/d/86235-2/Murrarie+1.jpg
It's a bit hard to see ... but I got a few of the clan in this one .. from right to left
Tiger and a new mate
then way in the back ground is the older gent+wife ... they were leaving at this stage
after that we see Jeremy and Tom having a bit of a Yap
then we have random cyclist ...
then we have some of the kiddies who were being entertained by all the kites
http://www.extremekites.com.au/gallery/d/86239-2/Murrarie+2.jpg
Wolfie on the right and Tom on the left

That was pretty funny. (Once I got the kite on the ground that is.) I'm glad of the outcome of no broken gear or people with that incident. People might want to know that this was my very first time in a buggy, flying a kite I've never flown before without a harness in "2 stroke wind", probably stupid of me, but I couldn't help myself. Big gust hit, handle flew out of my hand, spent the next little while figuring out how many loops this kite can do before (A) I run out of field or (B) it finally hits the ground. I'm sure there will be many obe's to come, you will just have to have the camera ready.
I think Tom's face may have looked the same with his gear spiraling out of control. :D
It's all laughs until one gets away from u hey Kondorman. Then things can get a bit hairy. :D

Top write up JustKiteSurf, any chance of sharing some of that wind down here in Melbourne? Still forecase for 5-10 knots coming Saturday and maybe 10-15 Sunday. Say what units are we talking about with this 2 "strokes" business ---- now knots that makes sense to me, strokes?
Liked the bit about the let go of one handle and the spirals. Reminded me of trying the NWP in high winds, was so strong I could not hang on to the handles any longer, let them both go, bars flew off like on the end of a high tension bungee cord. Retrieved gear 50 meters down wind.
Hey SB ..... you want some of that wind  ....it's all yours brother !!
2Stroke .... hmm ...predictability and power was like the way a 2 stroke engine works ... full on .. or none
There was very little in between
I actually had my bar ripped from my hands once or twice, that has not happened for a while.
And as for Kondorman .... that was a classic
I saw the last 10 seconds ... little buggy in the distance .... both feet firmly on the ground ... dust coming up everywhere ... kite in death spiral ...
and kondorman at the wheel ... heh heh heh
Like standing at the river .... directing Buffalo
Happy Days
Might just head over to the park for a little bash on Sunday ... wife/weather permitting
Don't know what time .... but if anyone is keen

Well after hijacking the Bribie thread .... Kondorman and I mustered together one of those last second afternoons ...
Sluggo and Westfire also made an apperance ....
The only thing missing was decent wind !!
We all arrived between 3.30 and 4 pm and managed to wrestle and flounder together for the next hour.
The wind was a nice 12 - 17 before we got there ... and just as we got there .... but once we all had a kite in the air it proceeded in playing silly buggers. We were all dropping like flies ... lol
Eventually ... we all gave up and hung out for a chat for about 3/4 hour. Was nice to catch up ...
Photos are all care of Tiger and Jemima

oops, misunderstanding there. I was talking about what your top speed would be in your new buggy. My record on the landboard stands at 31 km/h from a couple of weeks ago in about 10 knots down at Murrarie. I'm afraid it still maybe a little while yet for a buggy, I am making progress though in convincing the minister for finance of the need. Maybe someone can sell me their flexifoil buggy cheap when they upgrade to a Couger :D

Hey JKS, what was the name of your little white kite I had a fly with. Quite a bit twitchier than my Buster II wouldn't mind something similar for practicing turns etc...
Westfire's brother incase you don't remember my username.
Hey Icarium :p I see somebody has been playing with CAD :umnik: good stuff !!!
I reckon in 12 months .... there is going to be some variety of buggies turning up at our locals !
(That kite was a HQ Beamer II 1.8m)
Merrik : Its a Peter Lynn MKII ... you are more than welcome to have a run in her if you like. It's a nice light weight buggy, easy to get rolling in fairly light wind. Don't let Jeremy scare you either .... he finds a lot of buggies easy to flip
Jeremy : Give ya a ring tonight ;)
Sam : If you are down a kite ... there is always one lying around ... come down anyway
Tony : Was great to meet up mate, Saturday looks like a light wind afternoon ... flysurfer races perhaps :D
Tom: Get ya butt down
Sluggo : Perhaps we can use Saturday as a mock pack  ... I'll give ya a ring tonight

Hi Marty,
Saw the shots in the albums, you with a Flysurfer, nice. Did you purchase or is it a demo?
Hey Norm,
Long story :o It's actually Baggsys ... He sent it to me for a demo about ... hmmm ... 4 or 5 months ago. Due to the size (about 13 I think) I have been a little timid to get her out, plus the colder months always bring irregular winds. Nobody round here flys them either so I only had a little advice on how she would fly. I have a lot more than 3 excuses
Back to the kite ..... this bad boy is a power house  I have only had it flying 4 times ... the most recent being the best fly. Winds ranged from 5 to 10 knots. Its a very slow turner, but very easy to predict ... any sort of 'puff' in the wind gave me a smooth east to control burst of power. Very floaty kite :yes3:, I didn't jump very high, but during any pendulum swing (no matter how low) a small tug on the bar with the kite in the right post and I was dangling with ease. Wooo Hooo went through my head many a time ;) I was wearing a new set of work boots with very chunky grip, this made skudding a little jolty unless I pretty much sat right down on one boot with the other leg straight..... left some pretty nice lines in the grass !
I guess the moral of the story is ... I am a crap kite returner

Well after today elbow pads are pretty high up on the father's day wish list! My elbows stung pretty bad in the shower, but are good now. Today was my first good crack in a buggy with wind and I was amazed how much thinking is involved. Having never travelled so fast before, the kite is something else with all that apparent wind. :D
Marty you handed the logger back too soon, the wind picked up and you were really moving afterwards.
http://www.extremekites.com.au/gallery/d/87681-2/Marty+31-8-08.JPG

Nice work Kondorman you nearly covered in the oval :D
What kite were you using and what was wind speed?
This is why long beaches are great once you start getting some speed going doesn't take long to cover 5km in 20 knots. :D
Easterly are back here just need some more wind speed ;)

Hi guys,
Good to see that some of the eastern states got to enjoy the weather today.
Here in Sydney all the weekend plans were washed out when the rain came and the wind died.
Did get a chance to go to Maroubra beach yesterday arvo with Gareth (Happypants44) and Andrew 'Lefty' elbowman (Andrewm59)
and enjoy the good NE winds.
It was so nice to have just a smooth constant breeze, to remind you how good kite flying can be.
See ya's at Kite Tober, bring on the Easterly winds
Cheers

Probably wasn't worth it yesterday unless you had wellington boots. Today may be good, but coming from the west it might be a little gusty. There is already wind about. This is what the Bom reports
Saturday until midnight: W/SW winds 15/20 knots, increasing to 20/25 knots
during the morning before easing to 15/20 knots by early evening.
I don't know yet if I can make it, I have to do some form work for my shed

:whistle:Well the kats out of the bag now, thanks JKS. Marty & I had adjusted the foot pegs on the Cougar & were pushing each other up & down the road in front of his place, testing the steering. Marty gave a big push & told me to turn it as hard as possible, well I Did :( only to flip the buggy upside down on a hard paved road. The buggy scored some minor scatches & I got a fat lip, a cut on the inside of my bottom lip & grazes on my forehead, this is not how I thought I would OBE out of the Cougar, didn't even have a kite.:o Ahh well live & learn mental note when buggy back wheels come of the ground steer out of the turn I'm trying to make.:yes3:

Some good runs had buy all, Mchamilton was going great guns untill he busted his kite. Sluggo also had some awsome runs in the Cougar with a 3m buster, kite loops, tail slides, great runs. We have had our second flipping of the Cougar with Wolfie at the helm, got two wheels of the ground & then got punched buy a gust, the buggy flipped landed on top of him. Wolfie was only using his new 2m kite, just showing how gusty it was, hard to predict & fly in. To Dale, great to meet you & have a chat, see you out there soon keep you eyes on this thread for updates on who's going & when:yes3:

Opted not to hit the water and hit the park instead ..... and had a cracker.
1.5 hours moving time in the buggy
44.8 km traveled
I lost count after about 40 or 50 .... but that was a lot of laps of Murrarrie
Loads of new folk as well mate... few landboarders and buggy riders
Back feels like it's 100 years old and I think I re-cracked my rib but we had sooooooooooooooooooo much fun (Hows the Leg Sam)

Yeah I think I saw you zipping around on a 3m. Keep an eye on your bearings though as landboard bearings hate salt water.
It was a good day for wind but I was teaching all day.

well good news I got new bearings that will not let water get in and so far it's working:D and for the board I added resin based varnish so the board is not getting water in it and its working good but there is one thing I need bigger wheels!!! I'm thinking of making my own wheels and trucks but I don't know if it is a good idea.

As for the park ...
Looks like a bit of a moot forming for the afternoon today.
Will be there myself around 2 o'clock
Marty
Smokin afternoon yesterday.
Wind was Murrarieing between 5 and 25 as it usually does (Traffic wasn't too bad Mick ... must have been maily onthe North side)
We had Poodle, Riotflier, Samhavoc and myself .... + the local drunken skinhead and his wife in the afternoon
At times you were struggling to keep the kite in the air .... then times you were flamin screamin. Being a little overpowered on his 4m Buster Poodle managed to plough a nice section of skin from his back during on of the many 'on' times  ... so he bagged the 4 and then had a great run with Tigers 1.8 beamer and a PL bug. You did really well there buddy ... and thanks for helping to remove a few tangles in my Sonic :yes3: ... must bring more beer :o
Good to see Tony also .... he managed to get a few runs in the Cougar with his 1m trainer .... it was gusty !
And Sam ..... what a cracker, great afternoon mate .... we gotta get your bones in a Buggy ... I am getting sick of passing you :p

That's why I have a gear bag Tom, all the stuff that needs to go kiting goes into the bag and lives there helmet, pads, harness, tools ,etc. Just grab the bag on the way out the door and you know you have everything you need for the day. :D

ahhhh the irony Goz, I actually do have a big gear bag, it seems though that when it got packed some how I ommited my harness :(
Bummer Tom, you live you learn, at any rate you live. :)
Bet you it's not forgotten again for a while. Sucks when you turn up for a session only to realise you have forgotten a vital piece of equipment.
When I got there on Saturday afternoon I realized that I had left behind my whole bag of marbles .... though I think that it helped in the end

we're hoping for more southerly tomorrow
But have a good time all

P P P P P S Take Scooby snacks, makes the day better regardless :D:D
Hey John .... your not far off with the swamp comment.
Murrarie is a 're-claimed' dump site ... so its raised and drains fairly well ... but the top surface is flat/hard and has a few low spots ... well ... a few dozen low spots ... lol.
What I noticed yesterday is that some of the puddles you can see ... and some of the puddles are hiding under the grass
Makes for interesting scooby snack chats :D

So how was the run at Murrarie today? The wind has been blowing here all day, how depressing :( Looks like it would have been a good day, how were the poltergusts?
SoutherlyBuster
22-11-2008, 08:28 PM
PolterGusts are play their tricks down in Melbourne too. 20 - 30 knots or so, 0.7m^2 NASA (aka shoping bah) + roller blades! Zach and I had a ball. Have a good time Marty.
It was Murrarie at it's finest .....
Slightly greasy grass ... wet enough to slide but not wet enought that any damage was done nor much mud
Wind was either hardly there ... or 25 - 30 knots solid. (Sluggo managed to snap 2 lines).
Bugger all people .... and only 2 hooligans on trail bikes
Lotsa fun .... took a tonnnnnnnnnne of video ... playing with Sluggos camera mounts
He even ripped out a telescopic boom p[ole ... next thing we have a camera suspended 45 deg back from the back wheel ... about 1.5 metres back ... and about 1 metre off the ground ..
Unreal shot ... !!!
I felt like a movie star .... only problem was ... he was more demandng than me !
I have had a little look already at the raw footage ... duckies nutties !!

Hey guys, this was an idea I was toying with, to do some vids, just curious about water spray etc
did you just mount the camera on the pole or in some sort of housing.
Was the height and distance backwards enough for camera angle & to miss spray.
Thanks
JD
Hey John,
Camera was just mounted to pole .... no housing ... will take some picks of set up .. (only have video of it) .. and that will take a while to edit.
Quality of shot was awesome ... now I can notice the quality of the camera itself ... rather than just little bits of clearish shot amongst earthquakes.
We didn't have any problems with sea spray cause WE WERE IN A FUGIN PARK MAN
Mind you John ..... this stuff of Sluggos ... is the beez kneez. Did you see the photos I posted in the thread Don started ?
Maybe Ledonna will let me go kiting again tomorrow so I can get you some more pics ...

Didn't have enough time to go to Murrarie so went to the cricket ground which my house backs onto. Well if you thought Murrarie had bad poltigusts don't try this spot. With gusts over 30 knots I had to pack up before I made my missus a widow. At one time I was just sitting there with my kite parked directly overhead trying not to get dragged anywhere when a gust hit and picked me straight up about 3m, luckily it let me down gently. Got my heart pumping though and looking forward to some more predictable wind.
Hey Paul ..... wasn't it a MAD day
That cricket ground ... I know the one ... in todays wind ... your MAD  Hope ya had fun though ;)
Murrarie was it's usuall self ... but the gusts ... when they hit ... they tended to stay for 5 or 10 minutes.
Sluggo and I spent the afternoon between 0 and 60 kmh playing cat and mouse with each other.
We had video cameras mounted in different places all over the buggy (again)
... lots of laughs ... I even managed to run into him once or twice ...
Tony came down with his clan (Who were bonza nice to meet) and even gave his younges lad his first ride in Sluggos buggy. I would like to mention that he did BLOODY well ... infact ... he did just as good as Tony
