We just got one for Zachary (8 yr old) from KitePower Geelong.

now if you look closely, you will see that a white and red line has been attached to the quick release on the snap shackle back to the side ring on the harness. Goshen ---- that was a great tip, thanks for putting this on for us at the shop. It worked really great. It is very easy to find, no fumbling about, don't need to look down and the "where the hell is that dang red knob". (Spartan --- you migh want to think about adding one of these). The ubolt (do you call them at?) was put there so there is metal on metal contact for the release to work without snagging --- if the strop was directly put on the snap shackle it does need a bit of a tickle to release it, not so with the ubolt. Again thank's Goshen for great support and advice.

Zachary loves the harness, great fit.

The other great advice we got from Goshen was to attach the snap shackle directly to the cross bar, not the hook. That way it is more direct and closer to the body. Yep did that, but very importantly need something around the hook so the shackle does not fall into the hook and get snagged. Goshen said just get some duct tape around it. Well, I did one better. I crafted together some leather and velcro to make it removable (for when he eventually gets into water sport) and have it look better. It's the black leather attachment above.

Looks great Norm .... Zac is quite the 'model' ... lol
He must be progressing really well !! I am impressed :santa::friends:
Not meaning to be negative .... just curious ... The Quick release/strop mechanism .... did you buy that 'with' the harness ... or grab it later at the hardware etc ?
The reason I ask is I have read many many articles and stories how they are very prone to jamming when loaded. Another scarey factor to the their design (I believe) is that if jammed ... you tend to pull the realease cord harder, which in turn can cause the tiny little ring that connects the release pin to the rip cord to fail and unravvel ... then you have nothing at all to grab, the only way out is to unhook the strop fron the spreader bar.
(Hope I am wrong) :yes3:
Marty
P.S. Tiger has a black dakine waist harness ... looks very similar ... next time we moot, the lads will have to hook up and compare the pros and cons of waist vs seat :D

Good idea norman, but if you are going to use that type of quick release, make sure you change the ring on the pull pin to a solid type and silver solder it, so that it does not pull apart. Also be careful of the overlarge ring on the end of the hinged arm where the pin goes through.
Whichard quick release are the way to go if your going to try and make it as safe as possible. kids keep on pushing and pushing the envelope.

Marty,
The snap shackle is a Whichard. The white and red chord attached to the quick release ring on the whichard is from Kitepower, but could easily have been purchased at a hardware store. The ring on the end of the Whichard attached to the quick release is as standard on the Whichard. The strop it's self, is some braided chord with a central core that I have in the workshop, traced from a hardware store, plenty strong (compare strops at the kite store about 22$).
All,
I will check the state of the ring between the Whichard release pin and release chord and make sure it can not unravel. Thanks for the reminder on that one. Yes point taken, if the ring pull fails, it would be very hard to sever your self from the kite. This set up was as Goshen has set up his harness, directly to the bar centre rather than around the hook. The only way to have that extra safety, would be to use a donkey dick around the bar hook.
Sinbad,
I do not understand what you mean by the "overlarge ring on the end of the hinged arm ....". What concerns do you have regarding this?
There is one disadvange with this system, you can not rotate the bars to untwist the lines, you need to either loop the kite or spin your body around. Zachary and I don't spin the bars to untwist the lines, we either loop the kite or spin our bodies round.
