    hey bro's

i'm about to embark on another landboard build.

it will carbon with bamboo core and intergrated revo style trucks. It will me more freestyle orientated for those sessions where i feel the need for twisting and turning.

I'll be using 9" mbs tyres as i still need a relatvely large wheel for my soft beach.

anyway. before i comence the build i'm extracting ideas from around the globe.

So.... If you could dream of the perfect board. What would it have? what size? shape? height? features?

Hey Plummet, dont make the board to long, the shorter the board the quicker you'll twist and turn.

Good medium to firm board, with flex for impact, without it changing the rake on the trucks.

spork. going to real looking blue/white flames!

length wont be super short as i'll also be going fast. but it will definatly be more freestyle than the monster board.

i like by boards to flex to the ground and bottom out on the biggest botched landings. saves my ankles. thats the style of flex i'll be dailing into the board.

Edges of board well sealed so delamination cracks don't appear and lets the moisture in. Designed so edge deliminations don't happen full stop.

Edges of board well rounded, .... in case they hit your shins  .

Underside tough enough so when hit by rocks, they don't take little chunks out of the wood.

Good tracking (direction / steering). Adjustable spring rates (the word spring not just limited to coils but elastomers as well etc).

Wheels that don't pull the bearings through.

Tyres with built in kevlar lining so as to reduce risk of punctures.

Light weight, 6 kg or less, none of this 10 kg stuff

Strong enough to take the dirt action as well when the wind has dissapeared.

For freestyle, manoueverable enough to avoid having to pick up board and spin round to turn it. Sure there will always be a case when you have to pick up the board and spin round, but I've riden some boards they were terribly stiff on the steering. Hence adjustable spring rates.

i can tick most of the things on your list southyerly except kevlar tyres and rounded edges on the board..... well they will be rounded but at 7-8mm thick it will still be a shin slicer.

"Bottoming out" was one of the contributing factors to this injury.

1 cracked knee, 1 shattered ankle, multiple plates and screws, 5+ months in a wheelchair, intensive rehab, took a year for him to walk again. Happend in 2007. Nice T-Shirt though :good:

I guess that would have happened if the deck bottomed out or not. obviously he came down far to hard and fast. theres only so much force a board can disapate.

Its the same principle of setting up suspension on a mountain bike you anticapate your hardest reasonable hit and set your suspension to only just lightly bottom out on that hit. Then your get the most supple ride possible without wrecking yourself or the gear. Set you suspesion too hard and you get a harsh ride and less impact absorbtion. set it too soft and you will blow through your travel and bottom out hard.

I see no reason why the same principle wont work on a board. Infact it has been working on my current board for the last 3 years. That bad boy is perfectly set up for my weight and will only bottom out on the craziest of hits and i'm freaken pleased about that as its saved my ankles on plenty of occasions.

What about the base board concept but with landboard wheels :dontknow:

2 wheels as opposed to 4.

    Pros:
    Much lighter
    Less rolling resistance
    Less parts

    Cons:
    Higher COG
    Harder to balance @ start.
    Complexity to mount
    Complexity to steering

With regard to bottoming out, you could put some pre-flex into the board, ie convex up, but I'm sure you would do that any way Plummet.

Personally I think a floaty kite should be used if you're intending to go big to have a better cusioned landing, I assume you already have that with your Ozone Frenzy.

I've tried a couple od deck setups recently on my freestyle board and found the one with the lower center of gravity much easier to use and I feel more confident on it.
So my request is a low center of gravity.
It sounds like your on that one already.

Yeah southerly i get very few hard landings these day. but every now an then you stuff something up and have a harsh landing, yes i set about 30mm of covexity in the board for just those purposes. it means the in the middle the board is about 120mm high and at the lowest 95mm high.

too low and the board hits rocks etc. too high and its less stable. so the correct height is very important.

i like that home build on ebay!. not as good as my builds of course but i bet that thing goes real fast!!....

board is on the back burner. probably third on the list after twin tip and longboard skate....
but in truth i haven't felt the zing for building. too busy getting out there and doing it. between kitesurfing, landboarding, mountain bike and longboard skating there aint much time left for building. oh yeah factor in the 3 young kid and a wife and work.....

Sounds like you'll have all the boards covered then. I'd like have a go myself to build a deck but for now I'm working on my own truck design (I love my Revo's but they are heavy). I bought a carbon composite board (from a well known brand) and managed to shave .4kg of my Revo/granny tyres set up.

I'm jealous- just as the wind starts to pick up this season I go and rip a stomach muscle ( too much jumping with a 9kg board strapped to my feet) so now I'm waiting for it to heal. :boredom: ( any sympathy welcome!)

When you do get onto your deck I hope you keep us posted, I'd be keen to see your creation.

Poor bugger Pari, now you can take your cam down to the local kiting spot and be camera man :D . 9 kg that is a lot, it's like my 3 wheeler cross bow which I avoid very much to jump with it. You could always convert to the MBS matrix trucks their weight is fine.

Titanium, well your machining costs will sky rocket, I would not go there. Special machines are required.

I would start by weighing all your landboard parts Pari to see where the most weight is and start working on those parts first. If it's your trucks, well any thing that needs machining will be costly unless you have access to a Milling Machine and know how to use it. Melbourne has a store called Carba-Tec, mostly wood working tools but they also have metal milling machines, I'm always drooling when I walk past them, range between 700 and 900$.

ps a revo'd up deck shouldnt weigh in at 9kg. it should be between 5 and 6. something else is amiss.

pss my monster board is 10kg and i can jump that just fine.
