Has anyone tried using some of the non-slip tape products that are available in safety shops? The kind of stuff I'm thinking about is on page 207 of the catalogue here:

    http://bradyaust.dirxion.com/Main.asp

It's a bit exxy, but one roll would do quite a number of footpegs...

Yeah man ... I used a few versions similar stuff to that and found the following problems

    - The adhesive backing doesn't take long to start to fail
    - The edges will start to un stick and curl (even if you cut them with a round radius)
    - The 'grit' on the tape will wear off surprisingly quick making the tape smooth and useless

Some buggy's come with this tape fitted, and it doesn't last all that long

The problem with friction surfaces like tape or rubber is they depend entirely on contact and force to work, as soon as your foot loses contact or you relax then their performance is reduced to virtually nil.

This problem is exacerbated when you consider that in this incident in question contact with the pegs was lost as a result of a jarring action, where the front wheel was violently snatched in one direction causing the foot to lose contact

Ankle straps on the other hand work regardless of of much contact your foot has with the peg, yes there is a risk that jarring will cause the foot to become dislodged, but its more tolerant of this, and when the foot dose become dislodged it will ride upwards, not under the buggy, which is how lance here managed to run over his own foot!

Try this, Lance. I personally GUARANTEE your feet will not bounce of the footpegs. Ever. However, I make no such claims about your blood circulation.

    Andy....

Looks like you started something here wise.... :D

Those are not designed well Andy, if you don't beleive me put your harness on, set up a rig to hang from something so that your full weight is being held just off the ground/floor by the "death shackle" as I like to call them ;)
Then try to release the thing without looking at it?
Even if you get it to release it eventually, reload it and then try pulling in a direction that is at an angle to the release pin, you will find that it simply will not release, welded ring or not.
Take them back to where you bought them if you can and just get the Wichard snap shackle that looks like one in this link.

hot wire set up? (direct kite to buggy connection) hmmmmm.

WARNING TO ALL. if you think a broken leg is bad, how would a broken neck sit with you? if you are going to try using a hotwire set up i would suggest you start by firstly making a ROLL BAR, as you WILL end up underneath you buggy at some stage.
i found out the hard way.

i was very lucky the first time, my seat back is lower than my side rails and i was able to lay flat enough to miss most of the impact on my neck and head, my helmet (a full face) saved my chin and teeth, but still filled up with sand while it was acting as a brake. i was again lucky when i came to a stop, i was only in 1/2 inch of water, if it had have been a few inches i may have drowned.

with a hotwire set up a back reat is your biggest problem, it will stop you taking action to lay flat and try to miss the impact, it will keep you in the danger zone (as i call it)

if you are ever going to try and use a hotwire, do so with extreme care, and dont fly alone.

Try taping your xrays to a window and taking a photo from inside so the xray is backlit. Should work.

Wow looks like you got half of Bunnings in there mate!!!

From what you say about the way the wind changed pulling the eject would have been your best bet, sudden wind changes can be a bitch!

Wise, thats a really serious injury I really hope it goes well and all heals up fine for you, when are they going to mend the tibia?
Looks like your Fib was fractured and split in a few places too, above and below the main fracture?

We should all be contributing whatever knowledge we can to help prevent others from coming a cropper like you mate, I'm reading about too many serious land kiting injuries.
Imagine what this does for the confidence of the casual reader of the forums?
This sort of accident is and was preventable, we should discuss what we know we could have done better or different yeah?

As BGKD says, eject or ditch is the safest option when a sudden increase of wind is felt, especially when already going fairly quickly.
Obviously there has to be some way to hold ones feet on the pegs when riding rough ground, and sometimes a combo of both types of straps will help as do the hooked ends of the Libre style footpegs (but only of you feet are very firmly pressing into the hooks).
Never strapping in when the winds gusty.
Never hard wiring, thats just plain crazy.
Like Jimmy said if you cannot comfortably fly the kite statically then you will get into trouble with it in a buggy as the increased power builds from your apparent wind speed.

There are some good things coming out of this thread, maybe a "safe buggying guidelines could be a sticky on here somewhere Joel, that includes the sound advice from the combined wisdom of all the members?

Nice collection of hardware you have going in there though, might make it interesting next time you have to fly somewhere.
