Depends a lot on what you want to do and what your wind conditions are like. Are you inland ? Coastal ? into cruising or freestyle ? and how's your kite control ? And are you the slow and steady type or the hell no, give me the race kite type?!

Really depends a lot on your local conditions and what your skills are like, the more information you can give the more accurate the recommendation.

Seen good speeds set on all manner of kite types, it's more a matter of the right kite for the conditions and the rider.
You can go out and buy a kick arse race kite but if you can't handle it your not going to be breaking any speed records just yourself or the kite or both.

Fly what your comfortable with and can get the power down to the ground with and you will reap the rewards.

Probably a good intermediate kite will be the way to go.

If we can ever meet up at the salt lakes then you can try my kites (I only have two!), they are very different - the 5m flow is stable and sucks up the gusts and have flown this over-powered quiet a lot. Really stable but is pretty quick through the turns with the brake.

Then there is the 3m core - it's fast and and likes to pull, this is my high wind kite and I am hoping to push my speed with it. It has bitten me once with an OBE and tried again last weekend! Its is a wicked kite needs a decent blow to get it going - very different to the flow but has a huge grin factor.

Had a really nice session in 20-25 knots with a 3m Ozone Method at Kingston recently. Starts to generate park 'n ride pull around the 17-18 knot mark and is still pretty mild and controllable at 25 knots. I feel I'd still be ok to around 30 knots with it (I'm 82kg/Vmax). Doesn't tend to bow-tie or reef me sideways in gusts. A very well natured and easy to fly kite. Not in the same league as kites like the Vapor/Yakuza/Prodigy/Century etc which have a lot more power but also require a bit more skill to fly. And the latter kites also require bigger balls to fly than what I currently own :D (at least in those sort of winds....)

I use a variety of 4 line kites on handles. There are so many great kites in the world these days. I ride with people who use all sorts of brands and models. All the medium to high aspect kites from the good companies seem to work well. I have a bunch of Peter Lynn Kites and a Flexifoil blade . Some of them are quite old now and they still work well. My old C quads pull just fine. I love my 3m Twister 2, my 4m blade 3 works still has excellent performance even though they are up to Blade 5 now. Some people are happy with their de-powered sausage kites and Arcs and occasionally I even see people ride with LEI Surf kites Good on them if it works the way they like it, but I like the handles. If you want to race in a field of fast riders then its probably a good idea to have some very skinny race kites. If you want to jump then its high lift and if you just want jam around then anything thats still crispy from a good company will probably do. I still have some old 2 line kites from a long time ago that work really well in very high winds. I went to a meet with 45+ knots gusting off shore and the old Flexifoil Stackers were the kites to have that day. My super speed wing got passed around that day by people who had their foils bursting and ripping bridles all around me.

    85kg on a dry lake...
    Beginner wanting speed, 2m.
    Intermediate wanting speed, 3m.
Experienced wanting speed 4m to 4.5m.

Ultimately you're going to get the most speed on a dry lake out of a race kite, but you're going to need a hell of a lot of them to be able to pick the right one for the wind. If you're happy to shave a few km/h off then you're better with an Intermediate kite that will offer greater windrange.

I got a fly of the new HQ Toxic at Kingston, which I would put up in my top 5 of fixed bridles quite happily. It also holds the 24 hour distance world record. Cris Italy who set his 94.6km/h on his HQ Montana during the trip said to me "take it away or I buy the bloody thing." So we had to pack away :D

If you're after outright speed then experience plus a race kite is going to get you the most speed provided you have a blazing wind and the right kite size. If you're not that experienced, a good intermediate kite and a decent wind is going to give you your top speed at this stage of your kiting.

Gidday Trevalvin, Seen as Sunday arvo now has a seabreeze, I may attempt to get down there around 4 onwards. If so and your keen then I will bring down a variety of race kites. I have a whole quiver of Century's (1.8 all the way to 11mtrs), a yakuza 4.0, a Peter Lynn reactor 8.3 and Peel 3.6 and another whole quiver of old C Quads, (1.4 through to 8).

However I weigh in at around 117 and if the wind is around 20 to 30 knts. then I rarely need anything other than the 2, 3 and 4 metre range.

So depending on the wind the weather and the wife! (always the biggest hurdle to get around for an arvo of buggy maddness). Then I will bring a swag of goodies down and you can you can see for yourself why the best answer to your question will be to buy as many small second hand race kites of various sizes as you can get.

I'll always have a soft spot for the C Quads but technology has come a long way and top race kites of even five years ago won't cost much and still provide a big bang for your buck.

I'll watch the weather and keep you posted.

    Regards Shane

I doubt Trev is after more kite speed .... his PB is INCREDIBLE  (The quiet achiever)

Personally, I would be looking at changing the buggy to increase PB's. Pushing a PL any faster would be suicidal (imho)

Also interested in a report on the toxic kite.... The one pictured is a 6.5 m , bidle city by the look :popcorm1: , really want to know your view on the lift..advertising blurb says lift yet other practical reports say this is not so. Is it bladeish so to speak, or just plenty of pull.
