General Kiting

Well .... I am the newest member into the vision impaired club.

After managing to 'get by' for 30+ years .... I now have full time glasses.

Heres the question ...

How do you NOT kill them when you R kiting ?

Do not plant yourself head first into the sand. Don't dry wipe 'em - particularly at the beach - give em a squirt of water to dislodge any crud then a squirt of windex - i use my finger at this point so I can feel if there's any grit on them - then wipe dry with a microfibre cloth.

My glasses, until recently, were costing me at least $150 per pair at any optometrists I went to. Recently I discovered Zenni Optical and have ordered quite a few pairs from them. I even got a pair of multi focals with anti fingerprint/reflection coatings for around $40 plus postage. Depending on your script, you can buy glasses from as little as $10. Out of 8 pair or so, all the optics were spot on and most of the frames have been excellent. I think their company is based in the US but the glasses are made and sent from Hong Kong - takes about 2 weeks.

What info would I need to 'extract' from my optometrist for me to then order online and get the order right ?

You'll need your script and your pupillary distance (how far between your pupils) - sometimes that's on the script, somtimes not. Heaps of info here: http://www.zennioptical.com/prescription. I can highly recommend the anti fingerprint/hydrophillic coating - I can give 'em a wash and then give them a shake and only one or two small dots of water remain on the lens. The frames are certainly of lesser quality than most of what's in your local optometrists - but at the price, there's no surprise there. But I've been wearing a few different pairs around for a couple months now and they're completely fine.

I have done some research and discovered that quality of frame/lens makes zero difference when it comes to me sitting on, losing, dropping, scratching and caring for poorly So cheap and quantity has me interested.

I did get the surface treatment but I think it was based around glare



I have been going through street sign/information overload since Friday .... walking around looking at my hands ... drifting in and out of crystal clear ... telling everyone what 'that' says

Went for an eye test last week, optician put up a slide and asked me to read the smallest line I could see so I told him E3162... optician had to take a close look at the slide before he told me there is nothing wrong with my eyes, but next time I should read the big bold letters in the middle rather than being a smart arse and reading the slides serial number in the corner!

It's a nice feeling when they get the script exactly right and everything's in HD again

Some of the model #'s I've had that I have liked: 715821 234525 213521 318721 738521 The titanium frames are really, really light weight. I've got a couple pair of the 738521 - a pair of + .25 power for working at the computer and a pair of + 2 for close up reading of iPods and books etc. ( I just added the +2 to the left and right Sphere info to give me 2 X reading glasses on top of my scripts. (my close up vision is completely rubbish - my script is great for distance but I can't read the menu in a restaurant) and I've got two pair of the 715821 - one normal and one multi-focal for everyday wear and they're very comfy. If I was going to get another pair of multi focals, I'd go for a very deep lens height. The lenses on my multi focals are 32mm deep but that tends to put the start of the reading bit about halfway up the lens which interferes a little and I tend to wear them down my nose a bit. If I ordered another pair, I'd try and get some lenses maybe 40mm deep or so.

Having said that, I have a pair of 213521 in sunnys (titanium - light weight and very comfy) and the lens height is 39mm....but, the nose pads sit halfway down the glasses - so if I had got them in the multi focals, I still would have ended up with the same problem. Perhaps Aviator style would work better for that. Multi's would have cost me $300 here, with no guarantee that I'd like 'em and I wasn't willing to risk it. But at $40, it was certainly worth a gamble and they've worked out pretty good. I tend to use them when I'm going out for a meal. I've found multi focals a bit of a pain to work with 'cos I'm always looking down to rake or pick stuff up....straight through the reading bit of the glasses.

Ah, the net spoils us for choice....

I have found this has a detremental effect, as she looks even worse when I have them on.

Glad you bought this subject up as I'm at the stage that the hobby glasses I buy from the checkout at my supermarket are laying around everywhere.

I have destroyed so many, as I pop them into the top pocket and then lift a large item and crush them. I was fitting truck tyres yesterday and totalled another set. Another bloody $4.50 down the drain. I find I have to wear them for all my welding now.

I'm starting to find that I'm searching for the 2 X magnification rather than the older 1.5 so I guess my 53 years is catching up with me.

crap what does that say for me. I've been wearing glasses for distance since I was about 16

As for the kiting side of things, when I first started out I was wearing prescription sunnies. But found that after a year they were getting pretty sand blasted. I now just wear contacts with cheap tinted safty glasses to stop the sand getting in my eyes. I usually don't have any problems with getting sand in my eyes and irritating the contacts, but if I do I just rip the contacts out and squint. I only wear single use contacts, so I'm not worried about throwing a pair away (only worth a couple of $$ per pair)

So how bad is your eye sight then???

You're cruel man, Chook !!! .......now, where the heck did I put that microscope......

I have just been fitted for multifocals in clear and sunglasses at $560. John's budget buying sounds good. I find the multifocals work well once you get used to the odd angle distortions. I can still wear my regular sunnies to buggy if it ever warms up.

Had my first spectale related NDE today. Went to walk down the same stairway I usually run down and I very suddenly realized the first stair wasn't where it looked like it was, problem was .... I was on me way

..... a loud 'f••k' and a quick grab of the handrail got me sorted .... But the old adrenalin gland still managed to get in a squirt. Drivings a bit Of a buzz too ... Luckily I do 90% highway so it's been pretty easy to adjust.
