My trials of various knee pads for landboarding has a bit of a chequered past. For the new bee a brief history of how I came to the final selection of the Protec BMX Knee Pads should be interesting and help you in your decision what to buy. I started out using some elchepo pads from Kmart that I used to use for roller blading. Well the elasticised velcro straps on these didn't last too long, stretched and kept on stretching. Next I tried a set of cheap sets from Rebel Sports. These lasted for a few sessions until the plastic knee caps ripped off, why? The rivets holding the plastic cap to the nylon cloth was not reinforced. Then a trip to kite power and see what they have. Their suggestion were the Protec's. The only Protec's they had at the time were the Street Pads. These lasted for 17.5 hrs before they suffered the same fate as the Rebel Sports pair. Now here's the good bit, a call to Kitepower and them calling Protec ended up in a free of charge replacement set to the BMX Knee Pads, what the Protec people recommended for landboarding. Wow, what a great set of knee pads the BMX's are, and great after sales service from Kitepower, good one Goshen. So now we arrive at the review of the BMX Knee Pads. The key to these pads for landboarding, especially on grass where all sorts of things can snag on them when you have a buster is the curvature of the knee cap. It is nicely curved inwards so it does not act like a shovel and grab every thing in sight. You also get more rivets, 4 on each side for a total of 8 per leg. So how reliable are they, well if you want to know how long a product will last in the rough and tumble, give them to a landboarder learning the ropes (like me) that takes a lot of falls and hard ones. The BMX's have now gone through 20.0 hrs of use and no sign of giving up the ghost. From the pictures you can see the scud marks as proof that they have seen a few busters. The elasticised straps with velcros are split so you can put them on without having to slip them over your shoes or boots in my case. This is a big bonus as you don't have to take off your boots to put them on or stretch the rubbers like crazy to get them over your boots. There is an extra strap on the bottom below the knee to stop them from slipping down. No slipping of these pads. The contoured pading also helps to stop them slipping. On the inside, they are padded generously and feel comfy. The build quality is very good. No loose joins to fray after time. And they are really tough to take the knocks rather than your knees. Highly recommended product. SoutherlyBuster, Norman Freund.
