  1. My Sysmic S2 buggy is for sale. This is a great stable buggy in good condition. It has been washed with fresh water and sprayed with silicon spray after all beach rides, but predominantly used in-land on grass ovals. MidiXL tyres. Front wheel mud flap. The rear axle is removed quickly and easily with 4 bolts, enabling the buggy to be transported easily. It fits in the back of my Subaru Impreza hatch. With my buggy, I am including a number of free items to allow somebody new to buggying to start immediately having learnt how to fly power kites. Included for free in the sale of this Sysmic Buggy will be: The Sysmic 80 litre kite bag which can be strapped to the rear of the buggy. A helmet (one of the 2 in the photo) A Flysurfer Peak 1 9m depower single skin kite. This kite has seen a fair bit of use but still flies well. There are a few repairs to the leading edge. It includes lines and the bar that came with the kite. It is in a small backpack which can be used as a harness. However!! See next Size small ProLimit seat harness.     Flysurfer Speed5 12M

    It’s rare you fly a newer generation of a kite and find that the changes after years of evolution can still be so significant. The Flysurfer Speed 5 returns to its original DNA, it is the kite that should of been released after the Speed 3. When the Speed was originally released over a decade ago it was an evolutionary step, does anyone still remember that goofy video with Armin pushing a team rider off the boat to water launch? ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2PCJsKf3Jo ). The Speed was at the forefront of development, then came the Speed2 and it maintained that DNA of light wind and large float. The Speed3 then came along, and it was the largest evolutionary step that the Speed had taken, it had all the low wind ability however with the Triple Depower the kite nearly doubled its usable wind range and made the top-end all the more usable resulting in a huge boosting and highly floaty kite. Then the Speed4 released, and for the first time I felt that they had mixed far too much of the DNA from the old Psycho IV in there, it was an amazingly versatile kite but it didn’t feel the same as the old Speed series. They went back towards the Speed’s original DNA with the Lotus, however even then there was still room to move. After a session on the Speed5, you can just feel that the pure DNA of the Flysurfer Speed series is back. The kite performs at the bottom end, remains versatile and usable for such a high-aspect kite at the top end, and feels completely refined all over. Most of all the kite brings back the feeling of fun to flying as it’s incredibly forgiving. Laying the kite out on the beach pre-flight I was amazed at the vibrancy of the colour of the 12M even though it was a completely overcast day at the start. The kite looked incredible, I always thought the Speed3 Deluxe colour scheme was nice however the purple of the 12M and the slightly more detailed and intricate graphics look brilliant. The demo I was flying came with the Flysurfer Airstyle Infinity 3.0 bar, which is the green and black series bar. The bar has had again some small refinements to it regarding the chicken loop, however apart from colour scheme for the most part it’s very similar to the Infinity 2.0 bar. Pre-Inflating and launching the kite was a breeze, sanded one wingtip and slowly pulled the opposing edge up off the sand as it pre-inflated. Eventually with enough air inside it slipped out from the sand and took off. Once in the sky again it looked increidble, however it also looked higher aspect than the Speed3 whilst still seeming to retain a somewhat similar overall canopy shape. One thing that is clearly evident is that there’s no more crinkling across the front of the canopy, and whilst it’s slightly thicker between the top and bottom skins compared to a Sonic-FR it certainly has been reduced in thickness compared to the previous Flysurfer Speed kites making it feel like a faster wing flying forwards. The wind was fairly light, starting off on about 9 to 12 knots and I took off with the kite in the GT-Race Rapide++ buggy. All I could say is WOW, the kite felt solid from the start even in the light wind however it didn’t feel like a truck. Once in the buggy and moving the power the kite was producing just continued to increase until I scooted over 70km/h in incredibly light winds. The longer I held my line the more the kite continued to increase in speed. Dumping the power was incredibly easy, however I noticed when slowing down rapidly and really dropping the power out of the kite it remained incredibly stable and responsive. There were no surprises or shocks, it just behaved as I had the buggy slide sideways slowing the kite down preparing to turn. During this I noticed the vastly increased amount of depower on the kite compared to the previous versions I had flown. However the one point that I really noticed was the increase in turning speed, I was no longer going for the leader ends on a tight turn the bar was more than sufficient to get it to snap around 180 degrees when required. The depower range on the kite is far smoother on the bottom 3/4 of the bar throw, however release the bar to the very top 1/4 of the bar throw and you dump nearly all the power out of the kite. If you’re used to still having power there at the end of the bar throw it’s a quick fix, just use the stopped by sliding it down to your desired length on the bar. The bar pressure also felt a bit lighter than previous generations, I still don’t classify the Speed as a “light” bar pressure kite however I’m of the opinion less pressure the better allowing for longer kiting sessions and more aggressive handling in higher winds that typically increase the bar pressure. During flight in the buggy at speed the kite felt consistently solid, and for such a high aspect kite it continued to feel incredibly stable. One are the Speed 5 significantly excels over both previous models and kites such as the Sonic-FR is its stability, being slightly lower aspect and holding a bit more air in the kite just brings on a completely new level of stability. After a short period of time you become so trusting of the kite you pay less and less attention to it and more to your surroundings and where you’re kiting. The kite not only points incredibly high upwind, however downwind compared to previous Speed models it’s again significantly improved. Going downwind didn’t feel anywhere near as challenging as on previous models, some where you would need to loop it back over your shoulder to keep it back in the window from time to time. This allowed me to surprisingly park and ride downwind. Everything you do with the kite, how it responds, how it feels through the bar, how it behave in flight, it all just feels incredibly well refined over previous versions. There’s literally no single feature of the kite that I can say is a complete standout improvement area as so many areas of the whole kite have been so well refined that it’s the sum of all these improvements that makes the Speed 5 in my opinion the greatest evolutionary update to the Flysurfer Speed series of kites since the Speed 3. If you’re currently flying older Speeds, get your hands on a demo, it’ll be that familiar feeling you’re used to, just that the more you fly it the more you’ll notice how much of a step forward in performance the kite is whilst being incredibly stable, fun and trusting. This kite was provided for demo by James at @specialist_kiteboarding for as long as required until I felt comfortable having flown it long enough to write a review. Overall both flying the kite and the process of arranging a demo from James was a great, pressure-free experience.     Libre Vmax

    I've had my Vmax since 2009 and have currently done just over 8000km in it. The only thing that has broken in all that time, are the two plastic tri-glide buckles that hold the excess seat straps in place. This thing was just built right from the word go. It's very stable, it's very comfy. You can modify it with all sorts of extras if you want. I've added a bigfoot fork, alloy wheels, made a back rest for it (possibly the only thing missing from stock), a swan neck downtube and some axle extenders. Center of pull was pretty good from stock for my size with the buggy just breaking out at the back end first. I've added 4" extensions so all three wheels will basically slide together with midi's on and flying the Nasa Stars. The picture below has the Libre 8" extensions on the back end of the side rails but this makes it want to break traction on the front end first so they're a bit too long for me - I swapped to some home made 4" extensions and it's just about perfect now. All bolts are SS and none have seized on me. The downtube/swan neck can be easily adjusted by loosening the four bolts attached to the side rails and sliding the downtube fore/aft. The seat is very generous - it doesn't 'hug' you quite the way some other buggys do. You couldn't jump this without being strapped in. It's also a little heavy for that being around 25kg in stock form. Mine is quite a bit heavier now with alloy rims and midi tyres. Speaking of stock... note the excellent foot pegs with the padding up the side. The webbing heel strap is my addition. I was all set to buy a Peter Lynn as my first buggy....but made the mistake of having a ride in one of these. It was so much more comfy and sure footed that there was no way I could go for the smaller PL bug. Obviously, if you need a buggy that's quick to take apart and put in the back of a small car, then the Vmax will be at a disadvantage then. But if cruising or speed is your thing, then this deserves your consideration. I have had so many great trips with this buggy that I really regard it as THE best thing I have ever bought. You can see that with the stock straight downtube and bigfoot tyres, there is plenty of ground clearance. It's a bit lower with the swan neck downtube.... The only thing I would change is make the seat three inches narrower to really fit me. Although with a hotwire system, that sort of becomes irrelevant. Oh, and despite being super comfy, I think it's better with a back rest, something you'll have to knock up yourself as I don't think Libre make one for it. Highly recommended.

  6. Hi All, I thought I would get the ball rolling with the 2017 Kingston SE trip. Last year was an amazing experience and we're up for it again in January. Now please do not let all the politics with the Blokarter put you off, the Clay Pan (Lake Nadzab) is plenty big to share as it covers an area of approx 600 hectares. I have been looking at the calendar and for me, its a later start for Term One of school, so arriving on Saturday 14th January, leaving on Saturday 28th January 2017 is a possibility for Doug and myself. Staying at Kingston Caravan Park, the same plot as before. Lets see what you are all thinking...... Mez

  8. Hey, am new here but just wanted to share my entry to the sport as someone with the disability (paraplegic) Here is a little video of my recent experience on new brighton beach in CHCH, NZ. Have been lucky enough to have the help of Gav Mulvay to set up a buggy with hand controls and am having a great time with it. (thanks gav). It is a pretty simple and easily removable mod that seems to work great.

    Pansh Aurora 8M

    ive been a fan of the Pansh brand since my first 4m Sprint from them that I bought against all advice for very little money that proved to be a fantastic flyer. so naturally I couldn't resist trying out a depower kite of theirs. within 3 weeks of ordering a brand new custom coloured 8m Aurora turned up complete with bar and lines. all cost less than £250. that wouldn't even buy you the smallest vapour fixed bridle kite. now ive had it for a few months now and have flown it with varied weather conditions and it has been a struggle to get the right conditions. it turned up in the usual oversized stuff bag that Pansh provide for these depowers. I removed the 5th line as it came with 2 lines. the other attached to the lead lines allowing a depower position on emergency release rather than a fully folded jellyfish. the Aurora has 4 deflation zips per wing tip which aids in repacking the kite quite well though a larger one on the upper skin centrally might work better in my opinion. the build quality and materials are second to none and I love that they have printed the size on them too. on the centre of the kite it has a small opening closed with Velcro, I can only assume this is a blowout valve in the event it undergoes a large impact, yet im not convinced if it would do anything. you can see where the 5th line attaches but has been removed leaving some spare pigtails. First flight, straight from the bag, didn't go as excitingly as I hoped. id attached the lines walked back to launch and the nose tucked in without leaving the ground, pulling the bar in resulted in a better launch attempt. so I shortened the rear lines, several times until 150mm had been taken out. then it flew but would tuck at zenith. further adjustment and the rear lines were 200mm shorter and it would sit nicely but always on power. as soon as I touched the center line trim it would again tuck the nose and collapse. id even had a fellow buggier have a go, one of the uks top buggy pilots and he came back and he wasn't smiling. it would tuck then snap back causing a unsafe flying situation. so I thought it through, looked at the speed stystem and realised that as you depower the kite, it was able to reduce the aoa too far and the wind would be ontop of the canopy and push it down. I stopped this with a small mod of a rubber grommet on the speed system. it allows the kite to be powered up, but on depowering it would only let the b lines go as far as I wanted which left the a and b line identical lengths. this maintains a positive aoa at the front of the kite keeping it steady and sitting as it should. upon further depowering it would still allow the c lines to slacken and essentially break the back of the aerofoil resulting in some reflex and loss of lift. ive used grommets so its adjustable and later I may be able to change the line length its on instead. now I have only tried the mod in low winds but did help the kite to zenith by running backwards and there was no tuck but only stalling due to low wind. infact when the wind picked up enough the kite sat what looked like past the window directly above, this made me worry but it still didn't tuck or fall. could be a good sign? we will see, as soon as I get out in decent conditions. UPDATE!!!!! UPDATE!!!!! UPDATE!!!!! The mod on the speed system needed tweeking to make it reliable. The rubber grommets didn't work as one broke under use and allowed one edge to tuck again. I Replaced them with metal rings and tweeked it further...... When fully depowered the a lines are 1/2 inch above the b lines at the gather knot. This little positive aoa keeps it flying while allowing for good depower. Tacks were a sinch and suicide gybes became sexy all the while being able to throw the bar away, depower, hold the line and not worry about the kite. It is no race kite! My H8 in the same wind was much faster, but then the aurora did feel underpowered in certain reaches so would benifit from 15mph winds upwards for full advantage. I will race with it as and when the conditions allow, depower does hold a lot of advantages. It just needs to be lit up to make it worth it. Here's a video of last Friday at pembrey

    Day 1

    Day 1 (19 April 2015) We walk out of Bayankhongor and kite a few kilometers down a riverbed until the wind changes to headwind. Its 10km to Olziit where our course changes to a crosswind direction so we use our motor/generator setup to motor 7km, it worked ok on flat sealed road, unfortunately the next sealed road is thousands of km's away. The rest of the is was difficult going through spectacular hilly terrain with big thorn bushes and bad wind, not the easiest conditions to get used to new kites but happy to be underway.     Wrap Up

    Mad Way Mongolia Wrap Up We have done almost twice the distance we set out to do and done about 1500km upwind, the route for the next trip will need to be longer and more ambitious. The wide open plains of the Eurasian steppes are great for high speed and long distance but I miss the challenge of crossing high mountain passes like we had on the 2014 trip. We spend 3 days in Holangol, its hard to stop after so many days of nomadic life. We are using our unloaded buggy's with the electric drive to get around town. We eventually pack up the buggy's and ship them to some friends in China for storage. We catch a train back to Beijing, Joe's off to Canada and im working in China for a few weeks. The buggy's have done over 5000km counting last years trip, the only trouble we have had is worn out brake pads and some bent panniers. The kites have taken a flogging, we ran out of repair tape long ago and they are covered in medical tape, we have broken many lines and bridles but they are still going strong. Kites used, most commonly used in blue- NASA para wings(npw model 21, 2 line) 1 square meter x2 1.5m x2 2m 2.2m 2.4m 3.75m 4.5m Low aspect single skins made from modified Peter Lynn UniQ plans- 2m 3m 4m 8m High aspect single skins made from PL plans- 4m x2 6m Foil kites- 4m ozone access 2010 6m ozone access 2013 4.9m PL reactor. We traveled 3693 km in 49 days We walked about 50km mostly to get to food or water We motored 15km Fastest speed 75kph using the 4m uniq Longest day 232 km We only had one day without wind.     Day 29

    Day 29 (17 May 2015) The morning brings head winds with big lulls so we tack upwind through the long grass but have only made 8km by 6pm. Suddenly there's a wall of dark brown cloud approaching, we quickly pitch our tents behind some rushes, the dust storm is on us in minutes, quickly followed by driving rain, then sleet, then snow. Everything is white by sundown, hard to believe it was hot and sunny 4 hours ago. Distance traveled 8.5km Total distance 2141km

    Day 26

    Day 26 (14 May 2015) Wind arrives at 7 and we are cruising down a road under construction for 30km, then the road turns off towards another oil rig and the rest of the day is bumpy rutted tracks and extremely gusty cross upwind, we pick small kites to handle the gusts then cant move in the lulls, slow going and dangerous. we see a few foxes running around. Dinner is our standard meal of fried salami, cheese and mayonnaise on bread fried in butter, followed by a drink of hot seabuckthorn juice. Distance traveled 130km Total distance 2048km

    Day 21

    Day 21 (9 May 2015) No wind for most of the day, we walk and kite to a fork in the road, we hear there may be a military base with a small shop down one of the roads, dont know which road yet. 2 cold Mongolians on a motorbike stop at our camp and we gave them a hot cup of tea, this situation is usually round the other way. Today it was warm enough to take off our down jackets, we have been wearing every piece of clothing we have day and night for the last 10 days. Distance traveled 32 km Total distance 1625 km

    Day 20

    Day 20 (8 May 2015) Unpredictable wind all day, no prevailing direction, Joe lifted out of his buggy by a dust devil, he releases the kite which then gets lifted up and lands 500m out in tick land, Joe dresses up in all his wet weather gear and wades out to retrieve it. Two army guys stop us to check our passports in the evening, I got pulled out of my buggy while demonstrating buggying, much to everyone's amusement, then the army guys had a try, to our amusement. We stay the night at their nearby base and filled up on some much needed food and water. We pass the unsupported kite buggy distance record today, 1570km set my Craig Hansen and myself last year, that trip was mostly in high mountainous terrain, difficult but very rewarding. Distance traveled 55 km Total distance 1593 km

    Day 18

    Day 18 (6 May 2015) No wind so walk to town for breakfast and supplies, Joes phone is missing, our phones are our only navigation aid and connection to the outside world so Joe backtracks to our campsite to look for it, no luck so he starts asking around town and miraculously tracks down the kid that pinched it out of his bag. This was the only dishonesty we encountered, Mongolians are generally very honest people. I say goodbye to the mob of lambs and goats that have been chewing everything on our buggys and we walk a few km out of town and camp, our first no wind day. Distance traveled 14 km Total distance 1343 km

    Day 17

    Day 17 (5 May 2015) Kited to Javhlant for lunch, an annoying guy tries to guide us round town for money. We crossed the river and headed for the town of Tumentsogt, its 30km off our course but we have time and wind to spare. We soon found ourselves in a vast area of rolling hills and short green grass, we spent the afternoon hooning around and chasing deer, the wind is still cranking so we aim for the small town of Bayan 57km away, screaming down a wide dirt road until dark when the wind dies as it does most days, unfortunately 4km short of town. Distance traveled 121 km Total distance 1329 km

    Day 16

    Day 16 (4 May 2015) Still northerly wind in the morning so we abandon our plans of going to Onon and head along the north side of the river. The wind is cross or cross upwind and steadily increasing, we start on 4 meter kites then 2.5 then 1.5, we hold onto the 1.5m kites as long as we can, both laughing at the huge amount of power these tiny 2 line kites were making, after hours of sliding sideways down an old road with huge muddy potholes we hve to change to our smallest 1 meter kites. Joe gets chased by a pack of dogs. The wind keeps getting stronger, colder and more upwind with low dark clouds, we shelter in our kites for a while and continued when the wind eases slightly. The sun drops into the small gap below the clouds and gives us a strange yellow light with black skies, sometimes I wish I had enough room and money and spare weight for a decent camera. We camp in a dry salt marsh at 11pm, the strong wind continues all night and all the next day. Distance traveled 83 km total distance 1207 km

    Day 15

    Day 15 (3 May 2015) Leftover goats head for breakfast, warmed up by putting it in your tea, kited to city of Ondorhann through bumpy frozen swamp. Lunch, groceries and continue along north bank of Herlen river. We took a turnoff to go even further north to the Onon river, the birthplace of Chinggis Khann (Genghis Khan) but the persistent freezing northerly wind isn't helping. Distance traveled 56 km Total distance 1124 km

    Day 14

    Day 14 (2 May 2015) Rain in the morning then good wind, we make 45km before it switches to a strong headwind with driving snow. We shelter in our tents until it clears in the evening then make a few more km before dark. We are invited into a ger for the night, it was going to be a very cold night so we gladly accepted, dinner is a goats head boiled on a dung fueled fire, we sleep on the floor with the children. Distance traveled 49 km Total distance 1068 km

    Day 13

    Day 13 (1 May 2015)Gusty crosswind run to Darhan in the morning, the regenerative braking system is doing a good job of charging our batteries with excess kite power, we stop for lunch and groceries. Fast downwind run to Ulaan-ereg located on the Herlen river, stopped for dinner, luxury buggying today. Nice crosswind road through small hills in the evening, the sunset is spectacular as ever, we camp where road turned too far upwind. Distance traveled 120 km Total distance 1018 km

    Day 12

    Day 12 (30 April 2015) Freezing headwind all day, cant zig zag upwind because of the long grass, stayed in the tent. I celebrate my birthday by eating all the chocolate.

    Day 11

    Day 11 (29 April 2015) We learn of an abandoned soviet mig base 10km upwind of us so we zig-zag our way over smooth green fields to the area and found a ghost town with soviet arches and mig statues, I triy to buggy on the runway but got told off. We have lunch in the ruins then use our trick of kiting upwind in both directions then looking at our GPS track on the map and seeing where we can get to with our best angle. The only option was Darhan, 90 km away cross/upwind with no roads. The next 60 km is a nightmare of dense tick infested 1m high grass and unpredictable wind, we are stopping every 30 minutes to stop, strip, remove ticks and continue, not much fun in these temperatures. There are big herds of native antelope wandering around this area. at some stage we lost sight of each other but we eventually found each other and camp beside a road. Distance traveled 84 km Total distance 898 km

    Day 10

    Day 10 (28 April 2015) Good strong crosswind from 8, we stop in a rough town for lunch, 10 Mongolian pies each. I almost had a head on collision with a motorbike on the way into town. In the afternoon the dry brown surroundings we had been traveling through for the last 10 days gave way to short green grass. We walk through the town of Choir on the trans-mongolian railway and head north in the dark, lots of powerlines looming out of the dark, hard on the nerves. Distance traveled 182 km Total distance 813 km
